The beginning
Loewe 001 Eau de Cologne arrived in 2019 from perfumer Quentin Bisch, a fragrance built around contrast. The composition stacks bright citrus on top, rooty iris through the middle, and a creamy sandalwood drydown underneath, giving it a clean structure most other citrus scents never attempt. Bergamot and lemon open with that sharp, sunlit snap you expect from a cologne, but the iris grounds them before they have a chance to fly off. The base settles in with a soft musk-sandalwood blend that anchors the whole composition, keeping it from disappearing into the usual citrus-and-nothing-else territory. What Bisch does well here is give each layer real weight. The citrus isn't just a bright overture that fades into thin air; it has something solid to land on.
What separates 001 Eau de Cologne from the citrus shelves it shares with a hundred other bottles is the iris. Bisch uses it as a structural note, not an accent, powdery and a little soapy, giving the composition a modern spine. The Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian lemon do the bright opening work, but it's the iris that makes the fragrance feel composed rather than thrown together. The evolution
The first ten minutes are pure cologne. Citrus and ginger, sharp and awake. Around the thirty-minute mark, something shifts. The iris arrives with a powdery, almost soapy softness, and the citrus starts to recede rather than vanish. From the second hour onward, the fragrance settles into a creamy sandalwood and white musk base, with the orange blossom occasionally flickering through like a memory. Tonka bean warms the bottom but never overwhelms. The way the citrus hands off to the iris is gradual, almost courteous, like one ingredient stepping aside so another can take the lead. Once the iris settles, it gives way to that creamy sandalwood-musk drydown, and the whole composition takes on a softer, more skin-like quality. The fragrance stays close rather than projecting wide, which gives it an intimate feel.

Loewe 001 Eau de Cologne sits in an unusual corner of the market: it reads as a classical cologne but smells distinctly modern, thanks to the iris that most citrus compositions leave out. The iris carries weight here, and weight is what most citrus fragrances refuse to attempt. By layering that rooty, slightly powdery iris over a sharp bergamot-lemon opening and finishing on a creamy sandalwood-musk base, the scent lands somewhere between the easy reach of a designer cologne and the considered construction of something more niche.
