The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ballerina No 2 was created in 2014 by Benoist Lapouza under an idea from Marie-Hélène Rogeon. The brief centered on a rose and magnolia accord, two florals that together create an unexpected dialogue between sharp and soft, bold and restrained. Lapouza built around that pairing, anchoring it to a woody base that could carry the composition through. The rose brings a rich, velvety depth with a hint of citrus and honey, while magnolia contributes a lush, almost buttery floral quality with subtle green undertones. Together they create something that feels both intimate and expansive, a fragrance that commands attention through its sheer presence rather than through noise.
What makes Ballerina No 2 work is the tension between its elements. Magnolia contributes something creamier, more tropical, a white floral that softens the edges without becoming precious. The eglantine rose in the heart adds a subtle apple-rose quality that brightens the composition without overshadowing its partners. Iris provides powdery elegance that adds texture without dominating the bouquet. Violet threads through as a soft counterpoint, its delicate sweetness balancing the richer elements.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and tart, raspberry cutting through with the kind of immediacy that makes you lean closer. Bergamot adds a citrus sharpness, orange blossom a sweet-creamy counterpoint. As the top notes begin to recede, the florals take their turn at center stage. The rose appears first, not shy, not aggressive, just present. Magnolia joins with its creamy white warmth, and together they create a heart that feels lush and enveloping. Iris adds powdery elegance, while violet threads through as a soft purple accent. The base emerges gradually, revealing patchouli's earthiness alongside sandalwood's cream and amber's warmth. Vanilla contributes a sweet finish that softens the woodier elements. Ambrette seed lingers quietly, a musky whisper that stays close to the skin, adding a subtle animalic quality that grounds the composition.
Cultural impact
Les Parfums de Rosine has a distinct identity in the fragrance world, with rose at its center. Ballerina No 2 attracts those seeking a distinctive scent with a pronounced presence. The brand resonates with fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate a strong, memorable signature that lingers in the mind as much as on the skin. The compositions from this house tend to appeal to those who enjoy florals with character and depth.
