The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Starman arrived in 2024 from Laverne, a fragrance house whose catalogue reflects a clear fascination with creamy, gourmand-leaning men's perfumery. The brand leans confidently into that space, building compositions where sweetness, fruit, and cooling aromatics share the same stage. Starman opens with a confident burst of mint and peppermint, supported by Italian lemon and orange that cut through the sweetness before it can feel heavy. At the centre, caramel and fig deliver a warm, almost edible depth, while lavender adds a clean herbal thread. The base grounds everything with sandalwood, cedarwood, opoponax, musk, and Ambrox, turning what starts as a bright, airy opening into a smooth, resinous close that lasts well into the evening.
The interplay between cooling and creamy elements gives Starman its signature tension. Mint and peppermint arrive together at the top, producing a sharper, more layered freshness than either could alone, and that cool thread persists into the heart rather than disappearing. The caramel-fig-lavender centre softens the composition's edges, lending warmth and a faintly gourmand sweetness that never tips into syrup. Opoponax and Ambrox anchor the base with a quiet, resinous weight, balancing the lighter, sweeter notes above. The result feels like a deliberate hybrid, not a replication.
The evolution
Starman reads as a study in balance from the very first spray, pairing creamy coconut with an unexpected chill to create an opening that feels both refreshing and substantial. The mint, Italian lemon, and orange arrive together at the top, slicing through the richness of the coconut and keeping it from veering into something overly sweet or heavy. Within the first few minutes, the composition shifts as caramel and fig move forward, joined by lavender's gentle herbal hush, and the cold opening melts into something warmer and more rounded. The base settles in gradually, with sandalwood and cedarwood lending a smooth grain, while opoponax adds a quiet resinous hum and musk softens everything against the skin. Ambrox extends the trail without ever overwhelming it. The drydown stays close and creamy, lingering quietly as the brighter notes recede.
Cultural impact
Within Laverne's growing catalogue, Starman stands out as one of the brand's more coconut-forward compositions, placing creamy sweetness at its core and surrounding it with a confident mint accent. The profile shares some territory with Le Beau Paradise Garden, particularly in its coconut-and-lavender heart, but Starman pushes the mint further and grounds the drydown in a more resinous, woody direction. The fig adds a darker, fruitier undertone that sets it apart from purely tropical compositions, while the Ambrox and opoponax base gives the scent a longer-lasting, more grounded presence.
