The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Korloff Paris, the Parisian jeweler with roots dating back to 1978, has long translated the brilliance of its gemstone collections into wearable art. When the house set out to create its third fragrance, perfumer Daniel Paillasseur was tasked with capturing the sparkle and clarity of a red diamond in liquid form. The answer was Kn°III, a fragrance designed to mirror the multifaceted nature of precious stones, using brightness as a metaphor for brilliance and depth as a stand-in for rarity. Paillasseur built the composition around florals that catch light, a heart that anchors, and a base that glows, ensuring the fragrance feels like a gem from first spray to final fade.
The note philosophy behind Kn°III relies on contrast and balance. Ylang-Ylang and Vanilla form the fragrance's emotional core, one offering tropical brightness at the opening, the other warmth and comfort in the base. Bergamot and Amber provide structural support, the former lifting the composition early, the latter grounding it late. Patchouli and Freesia bring texture, one earthy, one powdery, tog ether ensuring the fragrance never feels flat or one-dimensional. Musk functions as a bridge between the heart and drydown, keeping everything connected and smooth. The result is a fragrance that feels coherent across its lifespan, where each stage follows naturally from the last.
The evolution
The evolution of Kn°III begins with an immediate burst of Bergamot and Ylang-Ylang, a combination that feels simultaneously fresh and tropical. Freesia enters quickly, softening the citrus edge and adding a powdery floral quality that makes the opening feel feminine without tipping into sweetness. As the composition matures, Patchouli takes over as the primary heart note, bringing its earthy, slightly bitter character forward. Musk tempers the Patchouli, adding warmth and a skin-like quality that makes the fragrance feel personal and Intimate. The drydown is where Kn°III truly comes into its own, as Vanilla and Amber create a warm, resinous finish that feels like a soft glow on the skin. This progression from bright to grounded to warm mirrors the journey of light moving through a faceted gemstone.
Cultural impact
Since its 2008 launch, Kn°III has influenced contemporary perfumery by bridging classic gemstone-inspired storytelling with modern olfactory trends. Its blend of citrus brightness and warm amber‑vanilla resonated with consumers seeking both elegance and approachability, prompting several niche houses to explore similar dual‑tone compositions. Over the past 15 years, the scent has been featured in runway shows, art installations, and cultural festivals, reinforcing the link between luxury jewelry aesthetics and fragrance design, and inspiring collaborations that celebrate the interplay of visual sparkle and aromatic depth.
