Why it exists.
The beginning
Massimiliano Torti built Labdanum Gold in 2018, and the title tells you most of what you need to know. Labdanum, a resin derived from the rockrose shrub, has long been one of perfumery's anchor materials, valued for the way it grounds heavier compositions with its dark, sticky warmth. Torti set out to frame that resin as the centerpiece, not a supporting actor. The pyramid reads like a thesis statement. Labdanum sits at the base in a way that feels architectural, holding up everything above it. Styrax and vermouth open the composition with a sharper energy, while Bulgarian rose, clove, frankincense, and jasmine form the middle movement. The leather accord in the base does its own work without tipping into suede or saddle territory.
Labdanum-dominant fragrances often split into two camps: the amber-sweet iterations that warm into caramelized softness, and the more animalic ones that lean into dark, furry territory. The evolution

Pink pepper and cardamom flicker underneath, giving the first minutes a dry, spiced heat that prickles rather than warms. The smoke builds quickly. Clove and black pepper push forward while frankincense adds depth, lending the composition a weight that feels ancient, almost ritualistic. Bulgarian rose threads through the middle, softening the pepper just enough to keep the composition from going monochrome. Jasmine is there too, but it stays in the background, giving the rose room to breathe and preventing the florals from competing with the smoke. As the composition settles, the labdanum takes over.
