The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Malabar evokes the richness of warm spices, noble woods, and a florality that refuses to hold back. This fragrance captures the appeal of somewhere specific, translating it into something you can wear. The composition builds on a legacy of aromatic pleasure: each note layered with intention, creating an olfactory experience that feels both familiar and entirely new. It invites you into a world where spices bloom and woods deepen, where florals assert themselves without apology.
What makes Malabar unusual is the balance between powdery iris and leather in the drydown. Most fragrances tip one way or the other, either the iris goes soapy and detached, or the leather goes harsh and industrial. Here, the Brazilian tonka bean acts as a bridge. It rounds the iris without killing its violet-like softness, and it rounds the leather without turning it into a suede footnote. The incense and ambroxan in the base keep everything grounded long after the top notes have packed up. This is a pyramid that actually earns its depth.
The evolution
The opening hits bright, pink pepper first, then the citrus quartet of grapefruit, mandarin, and bergamot arriving almost simultaneously. It's quick and expressive. Twenty minutes in, the sage appears as an aromatic coolness cutting through the brightness, and the iris begins to emerge. By the second hour, the citrus has receded and the heart takes full command: tonka bean sweetness, Indian cardamom warmth, and cedar providing structure without weight. The drydown is where Malabar earns its reputation. Leather and suede arrive together, not harsh, not smoky, just warm and close. Incense and ambroxan stretch the final act to a soft, skin-like whisper that can persist into the evening on most skin types.
Cultural impact
Malabar appeared in 2019 as a release from House of Hautt, entering a space where independent perfume houses continue to explore what fragrance can express. The composition places itself within the leather-and-powder category, pairing iris with leather in a way that invites comparison to more established works in this vein. This combination brings together contrasting textures: the cool, slightly powdery quality of iris against the warmth and depth of leather. The result is a fragrance that rewards wearing, revealing different facets as it settles into the skin.
