The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aroma 01 launched in 2023 in collaboration with the Indonesian jazz and soul collective Maliq & D'Essentials, joining the Untitled Humans collection. The brief asked a simple question: if a band could bottle its mood, what would that bottle smell like? The result is a composition built on soft textures rather than sharp declarations, a scent that operates like a slow tempo rather than a hook. On skin, it opens with an understated lift, then settles into a milky, green-edged warmth that feels closer to a held chord than a melody. There's a quiet confidence in the way it doesn't announce itself, just settles into the room's ambient hum. It rewards patience, revealing more of its character in the dry-down than in those first attentive minutes.
The choice of Figolide™, a molecular recreation of fig leaf, signals where the composition is headed before the first spray lands on skin. Combined with rose absolute and a velvet accord in the heart, the composition reads more like touch than taste. It's fragrance as a tactile sensation, engineered to evoke the feeling of fabric, skin, and closeness rather than a recognizable flavor. The fig leaf note carries a green lactonic coolness that never tips into sweetness, giving the rose a faintly powdery counterweight.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes lean cool. Violet leaf and coriander pull green and slightly bitter, ambrette softens the edges with its muslin-warm musk. Then the shift: rose absolute emerges, not loud but present, cushioned by Figolide™ and the velvet accord that gives the heart its named texture. The fig note doesn't smell like fig, it smells like the underside of a fig leaf held to the light, green and cool and faintly waxy. After 2-3 hours, the base asserts itself. Cypriol brings a dark, smoky wood quality that reads closer to incense than to traditional sandalwood. The sandalwood underneath is creamy, not sharp, and the vanilla is restrained, more of a warmth than a sweetness. By hour 6, what's left on fabric is the cypriol-sandalwood drydown, a woody amber that lingers close to skin for another 2-3 hours. The next morning on a sweater collar: vanilla, cypriol, the ghost of rose.
Cultural impact
Aroma 01 reflects an Indonesian creative landscape where music and fragrance increasingly share a common vocabulary. The collaboration between HMNS and Maliq & D'Essentials places the release at a genuine crossover point, linking the band's sonic palette with the brand's approach to scent. For fans of the group, the fragrance offers a wearable extension of music they already know; for fragrance buyers, it's an entry into a sound and a sensibility that rarely finds a direct crossover partner in Southeast Asia.
