The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Perfection did not arrive quickly. The name alone tells you that. "Kesempurnaan tidak mudah dicapai, tetapi selalu layak diperjuangkan", perfection is not easily achieved, but always worth pursuing. Cristian Sugiono spent two decades learning his craft before HMNS found him in 2019. One hundred and forty-five trials later, The Perfection was the result. Not a formula that happened. A formula that was earned. The spicy fougere structure was deliberate from the start: something that opens clean, carries heat in its center, and leaves a leather-warm trace that doesn't apologize for itself. This is what HMNS means when they say the scent of someone who finds beauty in the shared rather than the rare.
The spicy fougere structure is the deliberate backbone here. It is a form that dates back to classic masculine perfumery, but HMNS and Sugiono stripped it of its old formality. The Indonesian clove is not ornamental spice. It has weight, a resinous depth that Clove from other regions simply cannot replicate. Paired with nutmeg, it creates warmth that doesn't ask permission. The bergamot keeps the top clean, almost soapy, preventing the spice from overwhelming before it has had a chance to settle. The result is a fragrance that reads as both rigorous and approachable, the kind of composition that works because every element was placed with intention, not accumulated by accident.
The evolution
The opening lands clean. Bergamot and elemi arrive together, bright and citrus-forward, with the Indonesian clove announcing itself quickly underneath. There is no gentle easing into this one. The spice arrives in the first minutes, warming against the skin as the lavender and lily of the valley move in to soften what could have been harsh. The green pear does its work quietly, keeping the heart from going floral in a way that would feel old-fashioned. By the second hour, the leather takes over. Not aggressive. Not loud. But unmistakably present, backed by driftwood that keeps the drydown from going heavy. The sandalwood settles last, warm and close, the kind of base that someone notices only when they are already leaning in. On fabric, the driftwood and leather outlast everything else. The floral top notes vanish within the hour. What remains at four, five, six hours is skin-warm leather and wood. That is the tell. That is what people remember.
Cultural impact
The Perfection sits in the Gen XY collection, HMNS's masculine-leaning line, but its structure and clean-spicy character transcend easy gender categorization. In a market where fresh fragrances often sacrifice depth for wearability, this one does not. The Indonesian clove and leather drydown give it a specificity that wearers notice and return for. It is the kind of fragrance that performs best in heat, the heat is when it truly shines, according to those who have worn it through Indonesian summers.
