The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Prestige arrived in 2024 as a collaboration between HMNS and Indonesian actor Christian Sugiono, a fragrance built around the idea of personal victory, the specific scent of a moment when something clicks and you know it. The name does the heavy lifting. Prestige isn't subtlety, it isn't a whisper, it's the acknowledgment that some hours carry more weight than others and the person standing in them should smell like they know that. HMNS is an Indonesian fragrance house, and The Prestige sits within a catalog that has drawn attention for leaning into conceptual naming, treating each release as an idea rather than an arrangement of conventional notes. The Prestige continues that thread with the same clarity: a scent for the celebration after the work, or sometimes during it.
What makes the composition worth a second look is the tension between the opening and the base. Grapefruit and tobacco at the top set up a bright, slightly bitter, almost confrontational entry. None of that polite citrus, this grapefruit is the pith, sharp and just a little rude. Pink pepper adds a dry heat, more suggestion than burn. The heart introduces orris root, which is expensive, powdery, and notoriously hard to stabilize in a blend, paired with geranium for green lift and patchouli for weight.
The evolution
On skin, The Prestige starts loud and earns its quiet. The opening phase is all grapefruit and pepper, the tobacco present but reading more as atmosphere than note, a suggestion of something warm behind the brightness. Then orris arrives and changes the conversation. The sharpness softens, patchouli grounds the middle, and the composition settles into a balanced, slightly powdery, slightly earthy phase that feels like the actual heart of the fragrance. The orris and patchouli continue to trade dominance as the wear progresses, one pulling toward powder, the other toward earth, with the geranium holding the green current steady in the background. As the hours pass, the base takes over. Tolu balsam brings a low, warm sweetness, labdanum thickens it, and vetiver keeps the drydown from going cloying.
Cultural impact
The Prestige sits alongside The Perfection, another project with Christian Sugiono, and reflects the brand's ongoing approach of partnering with public figures to translate personal narratives into scent. It reads as a continuation of that collaborative thread, warm, resinous, and unapologetically grown-up. The composition carries the weight of a scent designed around an idea rather than a trend, and the tobacco-grapefruit-orris structure gives it a profile that holds its own within the broader landscape of celebrity-driven fragrance work.
