Why it exists.
The beginning
Genesys arrived in 2021 as a limited release from Grande, composed by Flavius Calaj with the kind of structure that rewards patience. The composition asks a simple question: what happens when you let citrus and dark fruit sit at the same table as tobacco, leather, and a properly animalic base? Bergamot and blood orange share the opening with plum and blackcurrant. The middle brings tobacco, oakmoss, leather, jasmine, and coriander into direct contact. The base settles into civet, castoreum, vanilla, and benzoin, materials that don't always behave well together but here feel inevitable. Only 86 pieces were made. That scarcity reflects the natural ceiling for a composition this dense, this deliberately overstuffed with materials that resist easy harmonization.
Most fragrances pick a lane: bright or dark, fresh or smoky, simple or layered. Genesys refuses. The top is a riot of citrus and fruit. Bergamot, blood orange, regular orange, pink pepper, blackcurrant, plum. Then the heart drops you into tobacco, oakmoss, leather, jasmine, and coriander without a seatbelt. The base layers civet and castoreum under vanilla and benzoin, a move that announces the perfumer's priorities immediately. Calaj built something that holds contradictions in the same glass and asks you to keep drinking.
The evolution
The opening hits with notable brightness. Blood orange and bergamot compete with plum's syrupy weight, and pink pepper adds a static charge that makes the whole first impression feel alive, almost restless. Then the tobacco arrives, and the temperature drops. The heart phase is where the leather settles into its proper role, less a surface note and more an anchor for everything around it. Oakmoss grounds the florals. Coriander does something green and slightly soapy at the edges. Jasmine is present but quiet, more texture than statement. This middle stretch runs warm, slightly bitter, the kind of dry tobacco that makes you think of a study at dusk rather than a campfire. As the wear continues, the base takes over completely. Civet and castoreum lend that unmistakable animal warmth, the kind that smells like skin after a long evening.
Cultural impact
Genesys occupies a strange corner of the niche landscape. Only 86 pieces were made, placing it firmly in rare-object territory. The fragrance blends warmth and animalic depth with a fruit-heavy opening that doesn't soften as the hours pass. Wearers tend to reach for it when the occasion calls for presence over performance.
