The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Karak & Shisha arrived in 2026 from Grande, composed by perfumer Marius Pană as a meditation on two rituals that share a quiet kinship. The karak tea stands as a beloved staple across the Gulf, a cardamom-thick brew boiled until the sugar melts into the milk, sweet and unapologetic in its richness. The shisha arrives as its evening companion, the slow smoke that turns conversation into ceremony. Pană translated this pairing into olfactory terms: a karak tea accord paired with a resinous, tobacco-rich heart built on Cambodian oud. The composition carries a warmth that feels both nostalgic and immediate, the kind of scent that conjures a specific kind of gathering without needing to name it.
What makes the composition worth slowing down for is the layering of gourmand sweetness against heavy resin. Strawberry and raspberry provide a fruit-jam opening, giving the karak tea a glossy edge rather than a flat spiced-milk read. The Taif Rose and masala chai in the heart sit between the fruit and the oud, softening the leap from confection to wood. Cambodian oud lends a sweeter, almost honeyed resin character that matches the dried fruits and beeswax underneath, its warmth threading through the composition like a slow-burning ember.
The evolution
On skin, the opening announces itself within the first ten minutes with a rush of warm spice: cinnamon, clove, and cardamom cutting through a wave of strawberry sweetness. The fruit feels almost candied at this stage, jammy rather than fresh, and the saffron threads through it like incense smoke curling through still air. By the thirty-minute mark the transition begins. The karak tea accord rises, and the composition shifts from confection into something warmer, almost like the smell of brewing chai before the milk goes in. The shisha tobacco comes forward in the second hour, and the fruit recedes enough to let the oud's resinous sweetness dominate the middle act. Three to four hours in, the drydown settles into a blend of dried fruits, tonka, and Cambodian oud, the woods taking on a velvet quality as the sharper spices fade into memory.
Cultural impact
Karak & Shisha arrives as a limited attar release, a format that signals intention and scarcity. The composition leans into a tea-led structure with a gourmand fruit opening, a combination that feels distinct within the broader landscape of oud-forward fragrances. By rendering the karak tea and shisha pairing as a concentrated attar rather than a lighter eau de parfum, Grande offers something that rewards slow wearing and close attention. The fruit notes, the rose, the masala chai, and the Cambodian oud all work together to create a layered experience that unfolds gradually across the skin.
