The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Faux Semblant, 'false appearance', arrives in Givenchy's La Collection Particulière as a study in contradiction. Dora Baghriche-Arnaud built the composition around a single tension: the bright, addictive sweetness of Moroccan orange blossom absolute against the deep, resinous weight of oud and sandalwood. It is a fragrance that presents one face and conceals another.
What makes this structure unusual is the sequencing. The honeyed white flower doesn't just sit on top of the base, it integrates with the amber and labdanum to create a heart that itself has weight, presence, a kind of golden warmth that doesn't immediately yield to the oud beneath. The sandalwood from Australia adds creaminess rather than sharpness, softening the oud's edges. There's a conversation happening between the bright florals and the darker woods, where neither overwhelms the other.
The evolution
The Somalian frankincense opens the composition with a cool, almost mineral smoke, not the roaring campfire kind, but something quieter, like incense in an empty room. Belgian angelica adds a faint herbal lift, green and slightly bitter, keeping the smoke from settling too heavily. As the top notes begin to recede, the Moroccan orange blossom absolute takes its place, thick, honeyed, and opulent. The Provençal honey amplifies the sweetness until it reads almost as a caramel note. Spanish labdanum and patchouli are present but muted at this stage, they're the scaffolding, not the show. The drydown is where Faux Semblant earns its name. The oud emerges slowly, dark and slightly animalic, wrapping around the sandalwood to create a base that is warm, creamy, and deeply resinous.
Cultural impact
Givenchy's La Collection Particulière presents Faux Semblant as a study in contrasts, bright white florals anchored by deep oud and sandalwood. The composition arrived in 2023 as part of the house's curated fragrance line, offering a blend of luminous floral notes with darker, more primal wood tones. The result is a scent that bridges two seemingly opposite worlds, the delicate, heady quality of white blossoms and the mysterious, almost forbidden depth of agarwood. This juxtaposition gives Faux Semblant its distinctive character, a fragrance that feels both ethereal and grounded, simultaneously delicate and bold.
