The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Givenchy was founded in Paris in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy, a house synonymous with aristocratic elegance and audacious style. The Gentleman line has always represented a man who is strong and sensitive, a contradiction Givenchy has embraced rather than resolved. In 2017, the house reimagined its 1974 classic Gentleman, not as a reissue, but as a statement about what masculine fragrance could be if rebuilt from the ground up. Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson were tasked with showing what that original scent would look like if created today, with modern materials and a modern sensibility. The result is a fragrance that honors its heritage while refusing to live in its shadow.
The note pyramid of Gentleman (2017) reflects a deliberate philosophy: startle, then refine, then anchor. The fruit and spice of the opening are designed to capture attention. The iris-lavender-geranium heart is designed to hold it. The leather-black vanilla husk-patchouli base is designed to leave a memory. This structure mirrors the house's broader approach to masculine fragrance, not about smelling pleasant, but about making a statement that lingers in the mind long after the skin has dried. The pairing of juicy fruit with dark leather may seem contradictory, but it is precisely this tension that makes the fragrance interesting.
The evolution
The journey of Gentleman (2017) begins with a crisp, fruit-forward opening: pear and pineapple create an immediate, juicy sweetness that is lively and confident. Cardamom intervenes with a warm spice that prevents the fruit from feeling lightweight. This opening is assertive, the kind of presence that fills a room. Within fifteen to twenty minutes, the heart takes over. Iris leads, introducing a powdery, almost violet-like elegance that slows the fragrance's pace. Lavender and geranium follow, adding green floral nuances that keep the heart grounded in a botanical, masculine register. The heart lingers for hours, a calm center amid the surrounding development. Finally, the drydown arrives, a dark, tactile finish built on leather, with black vanilla husk providing a sweet, smoky counterpoint and patchouli delivering earthy depth. This final phase is where Gentleman earns its name, a composed and lasting statement that stays close to the skin yet refuses to disappear.
Cultural impact
The 2017 Gentleman holds a specific position, it's not as bold as some masculine scents, not as sweet as others. It occupies a middle ground that makes it versatile: office-appropriate yet interesting, casual yet refined. It's a reliable choice for men who want something with presence that doesn't demand attention.
