The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Neon Garden emerged in 2022 from the mind of perfumer Fanny Bal, who translated Dries Van Noten's private garden into a scent. The Belgian design house, known for its bold prints and artisanal craftsmanship, gave Bal the creative freedom to explore an unusual concept: capturing the electric glow of neon against the organic hush of foliage. Bal chose mint as her electric entry point, a note that carries both freshness and artificial brightness. The heart notes of orris root and carrot seed bring the garden's natural side into focus, while ambroxan and musk ground the composition in warmth and skin-like intimacy. This is not a literal garden scent; it is an interpretation of contrast itself.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy of contrast. Mint and carrot seed are natural opposites; one is all brightness and air, the other is deep earth and root. Ori ris root bridges them with its powdery softness, while ambroxan and musk provide the warmth that allows the composition to settle. This is not a fragrance built for universal appeal. It is for those who appreciate tension, who enjoy the way mint's clarity can be grounded by earthy carrot seed, who find beauty in the contrast between electric brightness and intimate warmth. Bal's choice to use carrot seed, an unusual heart note, signals a commitment to originality over predictability.
The evolution
The journey begins with mint, an immediate burst of cool clarity that feels simultaneously natural and synthetic. This is the neon effect, the electric brightness that makes the garden feel alive at night. As the mint softens, orris root rises to meet it, bringing the powdery violet character that defines the heart. Carrot seed enters alongside, introducing its earthy, root-like quality that grounds the composition in something more primal and grounded. The contrast between mint's brightness and carrot seed's earthiness creates the fragrance's signature tension. The drydown shifts to ambroxan and musk, transforming the electric opening into something warm and intimate. The mint never fully disappears; it lingers as a memory beneath the skin-close embrace of the base notes, a reminder of the neon glow that started the journey.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Neon Garden has been noted for its unconventional mint‑iris duet, a combination that sets it apart from typical citrus‑green offerings. Reviewers often compare its synthetic amber drydown to the modern aesthetic of 1979 New Wave, while its powdery heart recalls the elegance of Dior Homme Intense. The fragrance has found a niche among those who appreciate a garden‑inspired scent that feels both fresh and slightly futuristic, earning a modest cult following in boutique circles.
