The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Un Deux Trois translates from French as "one, two, three," a counting cadence that suggests something elementary, almost playful. Julian Bedel composed this 2016 fragrance for Fueguia 1833 with a specific botanical muse in mind: the exuberant native vegetation of Taiwan, its trees and flowers captured through a Patagonian lens. The brand described it as carrying an exotic accord of flowers and wood, with green and fresh opening notes that bridge two hemispheres of flora. Bergamot and lemon lead that crisp, botanical overture before the florals take hold, lending the composition a brightness that recalls cut stems and sunlit gardens rather than anything sharp or synthetic.
What makes Un Deux Trois structurally unusual is its restraint. Most fragrances build outward, adding complexity through successive layers. This one stays narrow. Yulan magnolia, a rare cultivar native to East Asia, anchors the opening with its creamy, almost lemony petal character. Orange blossom follows with its familiar sun-warmed sweetness, folding into the magnolia rather than stepping in as a distinct announcement.
The evolution
On skin, Un Deux Trois behaves like a breath held briefly then released. The first twenty minutes present yulan magnolia at full volume: creamy, green-edged, with a coolness that reads almost mineral. Orange blossom arrives not as a separate phase but as a deepening of the magnolia's own sweetness, turning the cream toward honey without losing the green backbone. As the hours pass, the fresh citrus quality of the opening settles into the composition rather than vanishing, lending a clean thread that runs quietly beneath the florals for much of the wear. What lingers past four hours is a soapy, almost linen-like trace, not so much skin scent as the memory of clean fabric. The magnolia softens into a pale warmth, the orange blossom melts into something closer to candied peel, and the whole composition narrows into an intimate finish. It doesn't project far; it doesn't need to.
Cultural impact
Within the niche world, Fueguia 1833 draws on botanical sources from across the globe, including the flora of Taiwan translated through a South American perspective. Un Deux Trois fits that approach by bringing together yulan magnolia, orange blossom, bergamot, and lemon in a composition that reads as plant study as much as personal scent. The geographic sourcing itself becomes a kind of quiet provocation, a Taiwanese magnolia filtered through a Patagonian sensibility and bottled in Argentina.
