The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Icio arrived in 2019 as the first personal scent from Fabrizio Tagliacarne Perfumes, issued quietly without major marketing campaigns. The name comes from the affectionate nickname his grandfather used for him, a reminder of childhood afternoons spent beside the elder's well-groomed presence. The perfumer recalled his grandfather's daily ritual, a small ceremony of preparation that set the tone for each day, as inspiration for this fragrance. Rather than recreating an exact memory, Tagliacarne translated the feeling of that ritual into scent: something worn close to the skin, personal, developed over time rather than revealed immediately. The choice of tobacco and cedar as anchoring materials reflects that pursuit, ingredients the perfumer associates with his grandfather's study and grooming routine.
The note selection for Icio reflects a deliberate philosophy of grounded materials over synthetic sparkle. Tobacco, cedarwood, oud, and vetiver share a common thread: they are all materials with history, with texture, with a sense of place. Saffron and labdanum were chosen to bridge the gap between the raw opening and the smooth drydown, adding complexity without overwhelming the central narrative. Incense in the base provides a finish that feels contemplative rather than dramatic, a quiet exhale after the bolder heart notes have their say. The combination creates a fragrance that reads as cohesive from start to finish, each material pulling its weight rather than throwing itself forward.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with the unapologetic presence of tobacco leaf and green notes, setting a tone that feels both grounded and slightly wild. As the wearer moves through the first hour, the green notes recede and the heart emerges, a carefully calibrated blend of cedarwood, saffron, labdanum, and patchouli that introduces warmth without tipping into sweetness. Cedarwood dominates the early heart, its dry and slightly resinous character establishing a wooded atmosphere, while saffron adds a subtle warmth that catches in certain lights. Labdanum contributes depth and patchouli grounds the combination with its characteristic earthiness. By the later hours, the fragrance shifts again as vetiver, oud, and incense take over, creating a drydown that feels darker, smokier, and more intimate than the opening suggested. This evolution rewards the wearer who gives Icio time to breathe and develop on their skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 debut, Icio has become a quiet staple among collectors who value narrative‑driven scents. Wearers often cite its ability to evoke a nostalgic, smoky lounge without overwhelming the room, making it a go‑to for understated elegance. The fragrance’s blend of tobacco, green accord and oud positions it alongside other modern Italian niche releases, reinforcing Fabrizio Tagliacarne’s reputation for precise, story‑rich compositions.
