The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
SHAMAN arrives as Volume 1, Chapter 04 in MiN NEW YORK's Scent Stories series, each release a numbered entry in an ongoing narrative rather than a standalone product. The concept: a figure who exists between worlds, who travels between the mortal and the divine, who guards what others cannot see. Translating that into fragrance meant building a structure that could hold contradiction, cool and warm, bright and deep, present and ancient, without resolving the tension into something safe.
What makes this composition work is its architecture. The opening with violet leaf gives something cool and almost metallic, a brightness that reads modern. The heart builds with frankincense and labdanum, materials that have been священный (sacred) for millennia. The rose absolute in the heart is dark, not romantic; nutmeg adds a quiet heat. By the time patchouli and honey arrive in the base, the fragrance has completed a journey from contemporary cool to something older and more grounded. The ambergris and styrax add a quiet animal warmth that keeps the base from becoming merely earthy. It's a shamanic journey in miniature: up and out, then down and in.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, violet leaf with a slight metallic edge that catches light, mandarin orange adding brightness, cardamom warming underneath. The top phase lasts roughly 30 minutes before the heart takes over. What arrives next is where the fragrance earns its name: frankincense and labdanum rising together, smoke without aggression, the rose absolute adding depth without sweetness. This heart phase sustains for 3-4 hours on most skin. The drydown doesn't arrive so much as settle, patchouli's earthiness deepening, honey's sweetness appearing in quiet waves, ambergris and styrax adding a resinous warmth that stays close and intimate. On fabric, it can linger into the next day. On skin, expect 8-10 hours with moderate sillage, present without announcing itself.
Cultural impact
SHAMAN occupies a distinct position in the niche fragrance landscape, appealing to collectors who seek unconventional aromatic experiences over mainstream appeal. MiN NEW YORK, known for its conceptual approach to perfumery, designed this fragrance as an atmospheric statement rather than a crowd-pleaser. The violet leaf and mandarin combination creates a jarring yet compelling tension between green freshness and citrus brightness that challenges conventional fragrance structures. This experimental character attracts fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate bold, non-mainstream choices and signals a willingness to push boundaries.
