The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2012, Pierre Negrin composed Interlude Man as a meditation on contrast, chaos held within a moment of harmony. The brief, shaped by creative director Christopher Chong, asked a deceptively simple question: what does it smell like when everything is falling apart, and then stops? The answer is a fragrance that refuses to be still. From its arresting opening to its sprawling drydown, Interlude Man stages a conflict between brightness and darkness, sharp and soft, smoke and resin. It is not a comfortable fragrance. It is, however, an unforgettable one.
What makes Interlude Man unusual is its structure as narrative rather than linear development. The opening doesn't transition so much as detonate, a bright citrus note paired with pimento berry oil arrives with purpose, while oregano's bitter-green presence keeps the brightness honest. Then the incense takes over, not gently but completely, as if the first portion of wear were only prologue. The heart layers frankincense, opoponax, and amber into something dense and warm, while labdanum adds a resinous dimension that feels ancient.
The evolution
The opening hits like a cold room suddenly warmed, a citrus brightness followed immediately by pimento berry oil's sharp, aromatic presence. Oregano arrives next, unexpected and green, a bitter herb that cuts through the initial brightness like a hand through smoke. The composition then shifts as incense begins to rise, not softly but with purpose, carrying opoponax and amber with it. The heart that follows is dense and smoky, labdanum's resinous warmth coating everything, sweet and medicinal at once. As the fragrance develops, the drydown takes over with oud and leather anchoring the composition, dark and slightly animalic, while sandalwood and patchouli provide the warmth beneath. The smoky-woody drydown settles into the skin, creating a long-lasting presence that transforms throughout the wearing experience.
Cultural impact
Interlude Man occupies a singular position in niche perfumery, a fragrance that polarizes precisely because it refuses to compromise. Wearers either find it commanding and unforgettable or overwhelming and too much. What unites both camps is agreement on its performance: this is a fragrance that projects enormously and lasts for hours, the kind of scent that announces itself before you enter a room and lingers long after you leave. Interlude Man stands apart for its narrative ambition, creating an olfactory story that unfolds over time.
