The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nuit d'Issey Polaris arrived in 2020 as part of Issey Miyake's ongoing conversation with the night. The 'Nuit' line has always been about what happens when the day stops pretending, darker materials, longer statements, the kind of fragrance that earns its place after sundown. The name carries that weight, inviting you into the night where the fragrance feels equally at home.
The heart of this composition is oud and leather, two materials that have anchored serious perfumery for centuries because nothing else replaces them. Cedar and cypress add aromatic structure, making the woods feel like a forest at night rather than lumber stacked in a warehouse. Vanilla in the base isn't dessert-sweet; it's warm in the way that leather gets warm against skin. Amber and labdanum extend that warmth without making it soft. Gurjan balsam, a resinous material from the Dipterocarpus tree, adds an almost smoky depth that separates this from fragrances that just smell expensive. The combination doesn't announce itself. It settles.
The evolution
The opening hits cold, bergamot and black pepper that read sharp before cypress anchors them. For about thirty minutes, there's a tension between the citrus brightness and something deeper pushing through. Then the oud arrives, not loud but insistent. Patchouli follows, earthy and slightly sweet. The cedar keeps the whole middle grounded. By hour three, the leather has taken over. Vanilla and amber make it warm, but not sweet. The labdanum and gurjan balsam add a resinous quality that holds everything together. Nuit d'Issey Polaris doesn't fade, it transforms.
Cultural impact
Nuit d'Issey Polaris occupies a specific space in the market, with strong reception among those who appreciate what it brings to the table. The fragrance skews toward winter and evening, which aligns with its character, this isn't a fragrance that wants to be everywhere, all the time. It's for when the temperature drops and the night runs long. The discontinuation has made it harder to find, which has only increased its appeal among those who know what they're looking for.
