The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The brief was almost paradoxical: take oud, dark, resinous, unapologetically animalic, and make it translucent. Bright cooling notes of rosemary and yuzu were chosen as the foundation, not as decoration, but as the actual structure. On top of that foundation, the perfumer laid carefully selected molecules, white vetiver, white leather, materials chosen specifically because they carry oud's character without its weight. Smoked amber and myrrh arrived last, adding warmth without darkness. The result isn't a compromise between light and dark. It's the proof that the two were never enemies. The interplay between these elements creates a fragrance that feels both sophisticated and approachable, with each note contributing to a sense of refined elegance.
What makes Sunset Oud structurally unusual is the material selection at the base. White leather here means something cleaner, more abstract: the memory of leather rather than leather itself. Paired with smoked amber (smoke without soot) and oud that has been selected for its brighter molecules rather than its darkest ones, the base becomes a study in restraint. The heart notes reinforce this approach. Myrrh brings resin, but a dry, almost mineral resin rather than a sweet one.
The evolution
The opening hits quick: yuzu's citrus arrives cold, almost sharp, followed immediately by rosemary's herbal bite. The tobacco flower doesn't announce itself so much as it floats underneath, adding a whisper of warmth without sweetness. For the first thirty minutes, this is a bright fragrance. Almost aggressively fresh. Then the hand-off begins. The yuzu recedes. The rosemary settles into something cooler, almost mineral. White vetiver takes over the narrative, and suddenly the composition feels less like citrus and more like the air after rain on dry stone. The myrrh arrives quietly, adding a resinous thread that connects the cool heart to what's coming. The base notes begin to emerge gradually. The white leather arrives first, clean, abstract, almost abstract enough to not read as leather at all. The smoked amber follows, warming everything without darkening it.
Cultural impact
Sunset Oud occupies an unusual position in the oud category. This one approaches oud differently, with a restraint that sets it apart from more assertive interpretations. It was designed for the collector who appreciates oud but doesn't want to wear something that demands constant attention. The house positions itself toward those who treat fragrance as research, not performance. Sunset Oud fits that profile precisely. It rewards attention rather than demanding it. The fragrance invites you to discover its layers rather than announcing itself from across the room.
