Khmer Kodo: Chenla

The structural choice in Chenla matters because the top is loud, almost cheerful. Yuzu, pineapple, ginger, nutmeg, and rosemary land bright and commercial, like a mainstream citrus-spice opening. Then jasmine, neroli, Taif rose, and ylang-ylang arrive as a floral wave. Only the base, Cambodian oud, civet, hyraceum, Mysore sandalwood, Indian vetiver, and patchouli, pulls the composition back. That structural choice gives the fragrance a daylight face before it turns nocturnal.

The evolution

First ten minutes are a bright shock. Yuzu cuts cold, pineapple adds wet sweetness, ginger brings a dry heat at the back of the nose. Rosemary threads through like a green wire. It smells like a spa that got into something complicated. Twenty minutes in, the neroli and jasmine settle in. The Taif rose shows up with a jammy, slightly medicinal warmth that softens the citrus but doesn't kill it. Ylang-ylang adds a creamy, almost banana-like roundness. By the forty-minute mark the top is gone and the heart is doing the talking. The shift into base starts around the ninety-minute mark. Civet arrives first, a warm, furry, slightly soiled sweetness. Hyraceum deepens it into something mineral and fecal, like a stone warmed by a hand. The Cambodian oud takes its time: smoky, leathery, slightly rubbery, with a darkness that reads more animal than wood.
