The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Green Tea Citron Freesia launched in 2023 as a continuation of Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea line. The original Green Tea, launched decades ago, established itself as a fragrance built on clean, accessible freshness. Citron Freesia carries that ethos forward, adding depth without complicating the brief. Bergamot and mandarin open crisp and bright, lemongrass brings an herbal edge that keeps things interesting, and the freesia heart softens the whole composition into something genuinely wearable. The green tea note sits in the background throughout, giving the scent its name and its quiet anchor. It's green tea for someone who wants the idea of green tea but a little more happening underneath.
The surprise here is the mate absolute. Mate isn't a common base note, it's more often found in Latin American beverages, but in fragrance it brings an herbal, slightly bitter depth that gives the drydown more texture than you'd expect from a citrus-green fragrance. Where most scents in this category evaporate within a few hours, the mate and musk combination in the base keeps this grounded long after the citrus lifts. It's the difference between smelling fresh and feeling like you haven't faded.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, bergamot, mandarin, and lemongrass arrive together in a sharp, cool wave. The green tea follows within minutes, tempering the citrus brightness into something softer. By the 30-minute mark the freesia emerges, bringing a quiet floral sweetness that rounds the edges. The black pepper is present but restrained, more warmth than heat. As it moves into the drydown, the musk and mate take over, adding an herbal depth that keeps the scent from sliding into pure airiness. The fragrance offers good longevity, lingering close to the skin with moderate projection that invites closer acquaintance rather than announcing itself.
Cultural impact
The mate absolute in the base gives the drydown more character than the typical citrus-to-musky fade. It's the kind of small creative decision that makes the fragrance worth revisiting, adding a distinctive herbal quality that sets it apart from lighter entries in the genre.
