Why it exists.
The beginning
Redstone Mesa is the first entry in DSH Perfumes' Out West MiniSeries, a collection Dawn Spencer Hurwitz shaped around the American West. Launched in 2022, it translates a specific sensory vocabulary into wearable form. The official description names iron-filled rock, dry desert air, and resinous wood as the core images, and the note pyramid builds directly from that vocabulary: birch tar, Texas cedar and red cedar, fossilized amber and ambergris. It is, by Hurwitz's own framing, gorgeously unisex and grounded in geography rather than genre. The first in a series that sets tone for what comes after, Redstone Mesa functions as both a standalone composition and an opening argument.
What makes this composition structurally interesting is its layering of geological and botanical signals in a single drydown. Fossilized amber and ambergris sit beside Mysore sandalwood and Indian patchouli, anchoring the base with materials known for their depth and longevity. Bulgarian rose absolute appears in the heart, but the rose reads dusty and resinous rather than romantic, tempered by myrrh, copal, and cade oil. The inclusion of clay as an accord reference is unusual, and it gives the drydown a dry, slightly powdery cast that keeps the sweeter materials in check.
The evolution
Redstone Mesa does not perform like a polite floral. The birch tar announces itself quickly, sharp and smoky with a leathery char that arrives before anything else has time to settle. The cedars arrive alongside, both Texas and red, giving the composition a dry backbone almost immediately. The Bulgarian rose opens in the heart, but it is muted by myrrh and copal, reading more like dried petals pressed in a book than fresh-cut blooms. Cade oil adds a slightly medicinal warmth, and the clay accord reinforces the minerality Hurwitz built into the brief. As the composition settles into its base, labdanum, frankincense CO2 absolute, Mysore sandalwood, Indian patchouli, and fossilized amber blend into a low warm hum. The ambergris gives it a subtle animalic edge that keeps the drydown from going purely dry or dusty.

Redstone Mesa finds its audience among wearers drawn to compositions rooted in a specific sense of place. Rather than chasing seasonal trends or mainstream appeal, the scent commits to a regional, geological vocabulary and lets that commitment define its character.
