The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vice & Virtue is a 2011 parfum built on the idea of balance. Olivier Polge composed it around two opposing impulses, one airy and crystalline, the other warmer and more animal, meant to merge into a single skin scent rather than announce itself as two halves. The composition reads as an exercise in opposing materials, cool and warm held in the same breath, the airy notes lifting the heavier ones so the whole thing settles close to the pulse points instead of projecting outward. Marcel Wanders designed the bottle as a literal meeting of those two states, one side silver and geometric, the other tear-shaped and peach-toned, joined by the sprayer.
What makes the composition interesting is how little of it is sweet for a raspberry-rose floral. The raspberry arrives not as fruit but as a reddening of the iris, a shift from cool powder toward something warmer. Turkish rose and jasmine do the classical heavy lifting in the heart, but the patchouli and white cedarwood underneath keep the whole structure grounded and dry. Polge's signature restraint is the story here: a parfum that reads as white floral on first pass, then reveals itself as woody and faintly earthy the longer it sits.
The evolution
The opening is quick and bright: mandarin and cyclamen lift off within the first 10 minutes, with lily of the valley adding a green-soapy edge that reads almost transparent, like light through frosted glass. By the 30-minute mark the iris has settled into the foreground, powdery and cool, and the raspberry starts to show itself, not as sweetness but as a faint blush beneath the powder. Between 1 and 3 hours the Turkish rose and jasmine take over, fuller and more saturated than the opening promised. The drydown is where this earns its place: patchouli and white cedarwood come forward around hour 4, the amber warms everything underneath, and the musk pulls it all close to skin. The 6-hour mark is where it stops projecting and starts living on you. The next morning, on fabric, there's a faint trace of iris and cedarwood that feels like the scent remembered you were wearing it.
Cultural impact
Vice & Virtue is a 2011 parfum composed by Olivier Polge, with a bottle designed by Marcel Wanders and marketed by Kosé Corporation. The international version is named Vice & Virtue N° 3, suggesting the composition sits as one entry within a broader numbered series rather than standing alone. The fragrance wears as a skin scent, something that lives in the space between fabric and skin rather than projecting across a room. It performs especially well in transitional weather, with spring air amplifying its crystalline facets and milder temperatures letting the warmer, raspberry-laced base shine through.
