The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Chapel Factory emerged in 2020 with a mission that reads like a liturgical text: treat each perfume as a sacred act. Founded in France, the brand draws from incense traditions and minimalist design philosophy, creating fragrances that carry weight and intention. For Hermit Coat, perfumer Anaïs Biguine set out to capture the sensation of retreat, of withdrawal into solitude. The fragrance was conceived not for the world but for the person stepping away from it. Notes like ash and elemi in the opening immediately establish a tone of austere beauty, the bitter mineral quality of ash and the resinous spice of elemi setting the stage. This is a fragrance that refuses to flatter, instead offering something raw and honest, grounded in ceremonial tradition.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: smoke and ash to evoke the remnants of ritual, frankincense and elemi for their sacred resinous qualities, heliotrope and rose for fleeting softness within a predominantly austere landscape. Balsam fir grounds the composition in forest imagery, while ambroxan, musk, and amber provide the warm, lasting foundation. The pairing rationale is clear: each note serves the concept of withdrawal. Ash speaks to what remains after fire. Elemi offers resin without sweetness. Frankincense carries centuries of sacred use. Balsam fir provides the aromatic character of solitude.
The evolution
The fragrance unfolds like a ritual progression. In the opening, ash and elemi create an austere welcome, the dry mineral quality of ash immediately establishing a tone of quiet severity. Heliotrope softens only slightly, its powdery floral presence offering a brief exhale before the composition deepens. As the heart emerges, frankincense assumes its rightful place as the sacred note, its resinous smoke carrying generations of ceremonial use. Balsam fir arrives with forest depth and sweet-balsamic character, grounding the heart in an evergreen quality. Rose appears quietly within this landscape, a fragile floral counterpoint that never dominates but adds necessary warmth. The drydown settles into smoke as the persistent foundation, joined by ambroxan's complex warmth. Musk and amber complete the picture, offering skin-close intimacy and dry warmth that lingers long after the initial application. The entire arc moves from austere encounter to contemplative depth to a smoky, meditative persistence.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Hermit Coat has been praised for its meditative incense vibe, often likened to monastic rituals. Wearers note its ability to create a personal sanctuary, making it a favorite for quiet evenings and winter wardrobes. Its smoky‑amber profile places it alongside other niche incense fragrances while retaining a distinct, solitary character.
