The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dmitry Bortnikoff created the original Oud Maximus, and in 2019 he began work on a seasonal counterpart. The workshop became the site for developing a version suited to the cooler months, built around materials that feel appropriate when the temperature drops. Oud Maximus Autumn arrived as a fragrance designed for autumn wear, with a composition that takes advantage of heavier materials when they read as natural rather than excessive. The seasonal naming reflects this focus, a fragrance shaped by the rhythm of the year.
Natural ingredients don't behave like synthetics. Each batch can vary based on multiple factors. That's not necessarily a flaw. The house embraces this variation rather than correcting for consistency with artificial materials. With Oud Maximus Autumn, the oud comes from multiple origins, Indian, Borneo, Sri Lankan, Vietnamese, contributing to the overall composition. The result is a scent that reflects its ingredients in different ways depending on conditions. That variation is part of what makes the fragrance interesting for those who appreciate natural materials.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and immediate, citrus oils lifting the jasmine sambac into something almost sparkling. Sweet orange and bergamot don't hide behind the florals here. They lead. The cardamom and pink pepper follow quickly, adding warmth without sweetness. For the first thirty minutes, this reads as a warm citrus floral. Then the oud arrives, bringing its dark resinous weight alongside the Himalayan rose and clove. The heart becomes something rich and animalic. As the rose settles, the base notes take over. Sri Lankan oud anchors everything. Vanilla and tolu balsam add sweetness without softening. Birch tar brings smoke, and the civet and deer musk add depth that refuses to disappear. The drydown holds for hours, projection and longevity are above-average, the kind of presence that announces itself without being overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Among collectors who prioritize material authenticity over trend, Oud Maximus Autumn has attracted attention. Its discontinuation made it harder to find. The house's approach centers on natural ingredients and raw character, qualities that appeal to a segment of fragrance culture that values depth over volume. This is a scent that rewards consideration.
