The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
004 Gin Mandarine Musc is Bon Parfumeur's take on a gin and tonic, that specific pleasure of a cold drink in warm air. Perfumer Karine Dubreuil-Sereni built this around juniper berry's botanical clarity, pairing it with a citrus trio of mandarin, bergamot, and lemon that reads like the zest kicked into a glass. The tobacco and tonka bean in the base give it weight without heaviness, the kind of warmth that arrives quietly. Released in 2021, it's the brand's answer for someone who wants fresh without sacrificing depth.
What makes this work is the botanical backbone. Gin accord isn't a common starting point in perfumery, it demands juniper berry do real lifting, not just hint at something spa-like. The ginger and nutmeg in the heart keep the spices honest rather than powdery. And the Indonesian patchouli in the base is a deliberate choice over something heavier, it grounds without weighing down, letting the tobacco and tonka soften the finish into something close and skin-like rather than projecting and loud. The result is a composition that smells like the idea of a drink without trying to literally replicate one.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and immediate, mandarin, bergamot, and gin accord arriving together in a burst of citrus sparkle. That first 30 minutes is the most pronounced, the juniper reading clean and almost medicinal before it softens. Around the one-hour mark, the citrus begins to recede and the heart takes over, juniper berry, ginger, and nutmeg settling into a warm, aromatic middle that reads more herbal than fresh. This phase carries the fragrance through hours two to five, shifting slowly. The drydown is where 004 either wins you over or loses you. Tobacco, tonka bean, and white musk arrive together, creating an intimate skin scent that hugs rather than announces. On some skin, this reads as warm and softly sweet. On others, reviewers note it can turn furry or slightly sour. Either way, by hour six you're the only one who can still find it.
Cultural impact
Bon Parfumeur's numbered system disrupted how newcomers approach fragrance, no need to decode marketing language, just pick your notes and go. The 004 sits comfortably in their most-searched range, recommended often for warm-weather wear and for anyone transitioning from drugstore freshies to something with actual structure.
