The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bon Parfumeur's 403 Myrrh Shadow emerged from a brief inspired by Arabian Nights imagery. The founders wanted to translate mystery, warmth, and otherworldly beauty into something you could actually wear. Rather than literal storytelling, the approach channels that atmospheric quality through carefully selected materials. Perfumer Amélie Jacquin selected bitter orange and blackcurrant for the opening's luminosity, then built the heart around cypress and Sichuan pepper to capture something hidden and intriguing. The numbered collection format keeps the focus on what you smell rather than elaborate mythology. This is ancient allure made contemporary through deliberate construction rather than narrative.
The note selection for 403 reflects a philosophy of contrast and depth. Bitter orange and blackcurrant might seem like straightforward citrus, but the addition of blackcurrant adds a dark, almost wine-like quality that sets it apart. The heart combines cypress with Sichuan pepper and basil, creating an aromatic profile that feels more forest than kitchen. The base anchors everything in myrrh, a material with centuries of ritual and incense associations, balanced by vanilla's sweetness and Siam benzoin's balsamic warmth. Akigalawood contributes a woody complexity while cosmone adds that elusive animalic note that makes the drydown feel personal rather than composed.
The evolution
The journey of 403 begins with bitter orange and blackcurrant creating a bright but grounded opening. Grapefruit adds a bittersweet edge that prevents anything too cheerful. As the top notes fade, Sichuan pepper introduces a subtle tingle while basil and cypress form an aromatic forest impression. Cinnamon quietly weaves warmth through the green and spice accord. When the drydown arrives, myrrh takes center stage with its resinous, contemplative character. Vanilla and Siam benzoin soften the edges while cedarwood and akigalawood add woody dimensionality. Patchouli grounds everything, and cosmone provides an animalic whisper that suggests skin rather than projection. The arc moves from bright to contemplative, ending in something intimate and worn.
Cultural impact
403 Myrrh Shadow joins a lineage of contemporary amber fragrances that push beyond traditional oriental conventions. The resinous cypress in the heart and the myrrh-benzoin pairing give it a distinctive aromatic edge that separates it from vanilla-forward orientals. The 2025 launch places it among recent entries in the amber-resinous space, though the specific composition, warm and sensual with a spicy-green heart, carves its own territory.
