The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
202 exists because sometimes the simplest ideas are the hardest to execute. Bon Parfumeur built its collection around numbered simplicity, no elaborate marketing, just the fragrance and its intentions laid bare. Karine Dubreuil-Sereni designed 202 around a note rarely attempted in fine fragrance: watermelon. It takes a particular kind of confidence to build a perfume around something so familiar, so deeply embedded in memory and summer afternoons. The perfumer's task was to translate that recognizable sensation into something that could hold its own among more traditional ingredients, creating a composition where watermelon wouldn't feel out of place alongside floral and woody elements.
The perfumer didn't treat watermelon as a novelty accent. Instead, the entire structure builds from it, using redcurrant to introduce a bright, berry-like quality that intertwines with the fruit, jasmine and mango to create floral-tropical depth in the heart, and a base of caramel-peach-sandalwood to keep the composition grounded. The result is transparent and weightless. It smells like the thing it claims to be. No abstraction, no pretending, this is watermelon in a bottle, built for someone who wants that specific sensation without pretense or complication.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately: watermelon and citrus, bright and clean, like biting into a cold slice on a hot afternoon. Grapefruit adds a crisp edge while citron provides just enough herbal lift. For the first hour, this is refreshing and direct. Then redcurrant enters. The initial sweetness takes on new dimension as berry notes weave through, creating something slightly more complex. Jasmine and cyclamen add delicate floral layers while mango deepens the tropical quality. The watermelon remains present, becoming the foundation rather than the statement. By the third hour, the base takes over. Peach skin and caramel create a warm, intimate drydown while sandalwood adds a creamy, woody undertone. The sillage stays moderate throughout, close to the skin, never filling a room, but present enough to be noticed by someone standing nearby.
Cultural impact
202 sits in a specific position within the Bon Parfumeur lineup. The watermelon note draws attention for its unexpected placement in a serious perfume context, and many find the result unexpectedly pleasant. The translucent, summery character appeals to those who appreciate bright, approachable compositions. Moderate longevity and sillage keep it accessible rather than imposing. The fragrance occupies a particular niche for those who want something fruity without falling into predictable summer scent territory. Enthusiasts appreciate its particular balance, finding it neither forgettable nor overwhelming.
