The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aaron Way designed Universal Supreme as an exercise in summer sensation, working with Ghanaian incense traditions that Blackbird has explored since its founding in 2004. The brief centered on translating the specific quality of heat just before evening sets in, that charged stillness when the day's warmth lingers but shadows begin to lengthen. Rather than chasing obvious sunset imagery, Way focused on sensation itself, building a fragrance that shifts from bright fruit to quiet depth as the temperature drops.
The note choices reflect a specific philosophy about heat and transition. Cherry and strawberry represent the abundance of afternoon sun, while heliotrope and iris bring the quiet elegance that arrives as temperatures drop. Cedarwood and hay ground the heart in tactile reality rather than fantasy. In the drydown, frankincense honors the incense traditions that shaped Blackbird's identity, with oud and sandalwood adding depth that feels both intimate and expansive. Wearing Universal Supreme means experiencing that precise moment when summer heat begins to soften into evening calm.
The evolution
The opening arrives via cherry and strawberry, their sweetness immediate and sunlit. This fruity brightness serves as the threshold between day and the approaching stillness. As the top notes fade, heliotrope and iris introduce a powdery softness that cools the sensation, while cedarwood adds dry structure and hay lends a subtle grassy undertone. Rose appears as a quiet counterweight, its presence more felt than announced. By the drydown, frankincense brings resinsous warmth that connects to Blackbird's incense heritage while oud and sandalwood create a woodsy, contemplative finish. The arc moves from vivid heat to meditative cool.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 debut, Universal Supreme has become a soundtrack for youthful summer gatherings, influencing social media trends where users pair the cherry‑strawberry aroma with outdoor festivals and beach picnics. Its bold fruit‑woody contrast sparked a wave of similar compositions in niche houses, encouraging a resurgence of playful yet incense‑laden scents that celebrate both sweetness and depth, resonating with a generation that values experiential fragrance narratives.
