The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hallow V.2 began as a private formula, one of those creations made for the boutique's inner circle, never intended for wider release. By 2020, the 15th anniversary gave reason to revisit it. The original formula was reworked for permanent production, with improved projection and longevity. Mint was the key addition, a bright, cool counterpoint to the incense weight that shifted the entire character of the composition, giving it a cool-to-warm arc that the original lacked. The reformulation brings a sharper opening while retaining the dense, resinous quality that made the original memorable. The interplay between the cool mint and the warm, smoky base creates a dynamic experience that unfolds differently as the minutes pass.
The addition of mint to an oud-incense base is not a common move. Mint tends to read as a top-note freshness in citrus or fougère structures, here it sits against amber, frankincense, and benzoin, creating a tension between cool and warm that carries through the opening. The marzipan note is what makes the drydown distinctive. Marzipan is essentially bitter almond, sweet, nutty, with a slight medicinal edge. Paired with oud and benzoin, it gives the incense a softness that keeps it from reading as purely austere or sacred. Without the mint, this would be a straightforward incense.
The evolution
The opening phase belongs to mint. It arrives bright, almost sharp, cutting through the warming amber beneath it like a cold breath in a warm room. The frankincense and oud arrive together, dense and smoky, creating a rich counterpoint to the initial coolness. The benzoin sweetens the edges, softening the more austere smoke notes without overwhelming them. Rose appears briefly, not fresh-cut rose but something dried, papery, lending an unexpected vintage quality to the composition. Marzipan threads through as a quiet sweetness, adding depth and preventing the incense from becoming too heavy. By the drydown, the mint has vanished entirely. What remains is amber and oud, benzoin resin, and the faintest trace of marzipan. On fabric, the oud and amber persist longest, leaving a warm, slightly sweet trace that lingers in the air long after you've moved on.
Cultural impact
Blackbird has built a following among those who appreciate fragrance as an art form rather than a fashion accessory. Hallow V.2 embodies this philosophy: incense-forward, warm, with a drydown that rewards proximity. The composition appeals to those who want something with genuine character, a scent that tells a story as it evolves on skin. The fragrance is intimate in its presence, not designed to announce itself across a room but to reveal itself to those who come close. It's for someone who wants scent to be personal, a quiet conversation between the wearer and anyone fortunate enough to notice.
