The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pistachio Game takes its name from an ancient contest from the former Persian empire. Kings and queens, Arabian horses, a carefully maintained pistachio tree said to grant immortality. The rules are lost to history. But the winner walked away with everything, the horse, the country, the tree. That concept, high stakes, ancient ritual, the prize worth dying for, became the spine of this fragrance. Perfumer Jérôme Epinette built around that tension: something bright and something dark, held in the same hand. The name is a game. The fragrance is not.
The note structure is unusual. Eucalyptus and kumquat open sharp and camphorated, that initial burst reads almost medicinal before the heart arrives. Then the pistachio whispers rather than shouts, held in check by violet's powdery elegance and apple blossom's quiet sweetness. The somalian frankincense adds a resinous depth that bridges the freshness and the smoke. What's distinctive is the restraint, none of these notes dominate. They negotiate. The espresso in the base is the real surprise: bitter, roasted, grounding everything that came before it into something worn and intimate.
The evolution
The opening is all eucalyptus, sharp, clearing, almost clinical in its freshness. Kumquat adds a brief tartness before both recede. Thirty minutes in, the heart takes over. Pistachio arrives quietly, more suggestion than statement, while violet and apple blossom soften the edges. The frankincense adds resinous weight without heaviness. By the second hour, the base announces itself. Smoke first, not BBQ smoke, but something cleaner, almost mineral. Vetiver follows, earthy and slightly bitter. Sandalwood and white leather settle close to skin, warm and clean. The espresso note emerges last, bitter and roasted, anchoring everything. The drydown lasts for hours, close, intimate, the kind of scent that only someone standing beside you would notice. On fabric, it lingers into the next day, faint and resigned.
Cultural impact
Pistachio Game occupies unusual territory, smoky vetiver with aromatic freshness, a combination that resists easy comparison. For wearers seeking unconventional fragrances that reward attention, the 2023 release has found its audience among those who appreciate compositions that don't follow the expected map.
