The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Angelos Balamis launched Angelos Créations Olfactives in Thessaloníki in late 2018, returning from Parisian training with a clear vision: to build small-batch scents rooted in personal devotion rather than commercial impulse. Eau de Vertu was his first creation, a tribute to someone whose presence he describes as both virtuous and grounding. The name itself carries weight, a reference to virtue and moral character that shaped the scent's direction from the start. Balamis turned to green, bitter materials to honor the bittersweet quality of genuine inspiration, building a fragrance that reflects the complexity of its muse without sentimentality.
The note choices in Eau de Vertu reflect a specific philosophy: the opening must be honest, even if it risks being polarizing. Galbanum is not a safe material. It requires the wearer to engage with the scent on its own terms before the softer heart can unfold. Balamis paired it with ginger to keep the green grounded and with clary sage for its balancing herbaceous quality. Rose petals provide just enough softness to prevent the opening from becoming purely austere. In the heart, mimosa and lily of the valley create a delicate floral character that contrasts sharply with the bitter opening, while tuberose and jasmine add richness that moves the scent toward warmth.
The evolution
The scent opens with galbanum, chosen for its sharp, uncompromising greenness. It is the first statement, and it does not apologize. Ginger and clary sage accompany it, adding warmth and herbaceous clarity so the green does not feel harsh. Rose petals are present but restrained, a whisper of floral softness against the bitterness. As the top notes fade, the heart develops through mimosa and lily of the valley, two florals with a quiet, understated quality. Tuberose and jasmine deepen this middle phase with richness and warmth. Heliotrope adds a subtle, powdery sweetness that bridges the florals into the base. The drydown settles into mineral notes and oakmoss, an earthy, grounded foundation that feels earned after the green opening. Hinoki wood brings a quiet Japanese cedar calm to the finish, and musk softens everything into a skin-close presence that lingers for hours.
Cultural impact
Eau De Vertu quickly became a reference point for those seeking a green‑floral that feels both classic and forward‑thinking. Reviewers note its ability to sit between traditional chypre structures and modern avant‑garde sensibilities, making it a go‑to for collectors exploring the intersection of heritage and innovation.
