The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Angelos Balamis created Tabac Libre for a close friend who wanted a tobacco fragrance that did not rely on cigarette imagery to communicate its identity. Working from the Angelos Créations Olfactives atelier in Thessaloniki, Balamis approached the brief with the rigour of a French-trained perfumer and the spontaneity that comes from living in a city where the Aegean wind changes temperature by the hour. The brief was simple: true-to-nature tobacco, no smoke, no apology.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of deliberate contrast. Balamis paired rum and saffron not because they are fashionable, but because their combined warmth and slight bitterness mirror the dual character of tobacco itself, which is both soothing and assertive. The immortelle and osmanthus in the heart were chosen to soften tobacco's rougher edges without disguising them. The drydown's boletus edulis and castoreum were included as an intentional nod to imperfection, a refusal to sand down the fragrance's character into something merely pleasant.
The evolution
The opening accord establishes Tabac Libre as a sensory statement. Rum and white cognac arrive with an almost tactile warmth, while tobacco leaf and coffee create a roasted depth that feels immediate and honest. Cardamom sharpens the edges, and saffron threads through as a quiet golden note that signals this is not a straightforward fragrance. As the spirits mellow, the heart unfolds with unexpected grace. Hay and immortelle evoke sun-dried botanicals, while osmanthus and plum introduce a dark, jammy sweetness that feels almost edible. Carnation and violet add waxy florals, and carrot seed grounds the composition with an earthy, mineral quality that prevents sweetness from taking over. By the time the drydown arrives, the fragrance has shifted from warmth to gravitas. Cypriol and myrrh create a smoky-resinous foundation, while castoreum and weathered wood deliver an animalic depth that feels worn and natural. Boletus edulis appears as a subtle earthy-mushroom note that most wearers will not identify consciously but will feel as an added dimension of groundedness.
Cultural impact
Since its 2020 debut, Tabac Libre has been praised in niche forums for delivering a tobacco experience that feels non‑smoking, earning compliments for its bold opening and lasting warmth. Wearers often cite it as a winter staple, comparing its depth to classic tobacco attars while noting its modern spice twist.
