The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Curious arrived in 2017 from the studio of Mandy Aftel. The composition was inspired by the atmosphere of the Aftel Archive of Curious Scents, an archive that holds and houses perfume artifacts and reference materials. Aftel herself described it as a smoky musk, threaded with dried fruit and precious woods, meant to mix with each wearer's skin in its own idiosyncratic way. The name functions as an open invitation, an encouragement to lean in, to pay closer attention to what the composition is actually doing on the skin. Each wearing yields something slightly different, shaped by the chemistry of the person wearing it and the temperature of the room, the humidity of the day. It rewards attention and folds new details into the familiar with every revisit.
Hay absolute is one of those materials that rarely appears on pyramids because it smells exactly like its name, sun-warmed cut grass and dusty loft, and most compositions tend to use it sparingly. Aftel puts it near center stage, pairing it with tobacco absolute and orange leaf so the green sweetness and the cured-leaf bitterness pull against each other in plain sight. The smoke is the referee. Fujian cypress and fruit tree woods give the drydown a resinous warmth that keeps the whole thing from drifting into novelty.
The evolution
The first half hour smells like biting into an orange slice that's been stored next to a cedar box, bright and almost green, with a faint caramel sweetness that arrives unannounced. Then the tobacco absolute rises, and the citrus doesn't disappear but recedes, like a conversation shifting from one voice to two. Over the next hour the hay pushes forward, dusty and sun-warmed, and the smoke settles around it in a thin gray layer, not dominant, just present. The drydown is where Curious earns its reputation, a low murmur of precious woods and dried fruit that clings close to the skin, a quiet and persistent thing. It wears like the smell of a coat pocket that held an apple all afternoon, intimate and slightly sweet, with the woodsmoke still threading through underneath.
Cultural impact
Curious occupies a distinctive place among artisan fragrances that center their compositions on raw botanical materials rather than synthetic shortcuts. It appeals to wearers who care less about projection and more about what's actually in the bottle, who want to smell hay absolute and tobacco absolute and understand what those materials bring to a composition. The fragrance sits alongside other natural-focused houses where the perfume itself carries the message and the presentation stays understated.
