The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fig offers more than the fruit alone. Jasmine sambac and fir absolute provide a substantial, grounded base while yuzu and Seville lavender keep the composition lively and airy. The fragrance unfolds with a bright, citrusy opening from the yuzu that immediately lifts the heavier floral and resinous elements, preventing them from becoming dense or cloying. As the yuzu softens, the jasmine sambac emerges, creamy and slightly indolic, giving the scent a lush, romantic quality. The fir absolute anchors the composition with its forest-like depth, adding a resinous, slightly sweet woodiness that lingers in the background. The Seville lavender bridges the top and base notes, its herbaceous quality smoothing the transition between the bright opening and the warm, lingering dry-down.
What makes Fig unusual is its use of hyraceum, an animalic material that brings unexpected depth to the composition. In perfumery, it's known for a complex character that modern formulations often replace with synthetic alternatives. Aftelier chose not to replace it, retaining this material that lends a distinctive quality to the drydown. The Seville lavender absolute adds a fruity, herbal quality that bridges the green opening and the warm base without ever becoming sweet.
The evolution
Grand fir and pink grapefruit hit first, a sharp, forest-fresh opening that clears the air. Clean and crisp, but not sterile. Within minutes, jasmine sambac blooms fat and slow, releasing something almost edible. The pink pepper keeps a soft prickle in the background, a question that answers itself before you realize you asked it. Seville lavender rounds the edges into something lazier, rounder. As the top notes fade, fir settles into the base alongside the hyraceum. That's where Fig earns its reputation, the animalic note arrives late and stays close, wrapping around the skin like warmth you didn't expect. It doesn't announce itself. It lingers.
Cultural impact
Fig occupies a distinct space within the fig-forward category, appealing to those who seek complexity beyond the typical fruity-green interpretation. The fragrance leans into an animalic base that many houses sidestep entirely. Its natural materials create a sensory experience that rewards patient wear, inviting the wearer to notice how the composition evolves throughout the day. Those drawn to this scent appreciate its willingness to embrace imperfection and complexity, finding value in a fragrance that offers genuine depth rather than surface appeal.
