The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Crème Exquis arrived in 2022, marking a new direction. Bertrand Duchaufour built the composition around a single tension: cool powdery florals against deeply warm gourmand materials. The idea was to make something indulgent without becoming one-note, rich without overwhelming. Chocolate, caramel, and coffee offered obvious warmth, their sweetness tempered by something darker, almost resinous. Iris and orchid provided the counterweight, the cool, almost mineral restraint that could ground the sweetness into something wearable. Oak absolute anchored the base, ensuring the sweetness never lifted off the skin like perfume should.
What makes Crème Exquis work is that it never resolves. The cool powdery iris doesn't disappear when the chocolate arrives, it stays present, threading itself through the sweetness like a subtle argument. The heart builds rich and velvety, orchid adding an almost tropical creaminess that could tip into cliché. But the coffee surfaces before that happens, sharpening the composition back into focus. Honey and Tahitian vanilla add warmth in the drydown, but the Ceylon cinnamon keeps it from becoming simple. This is a fragrance about balance, but the interesting kind, where both sides are fighting for attention.
The evolution
The opening is the sharpest moment. Iris and Brazilian orange arrive first, the orange providing a brief citrus brightness before the black cherry steps in and takes things darker. The cherry isn't sweet, it's almost medicinal for the first minute, like bitter fruit kernels. Then the chocolate and caramel settle over it, and the composition softens. The heart phase lasts for hours. Orchid and caramel create a warm, enveloping middle that wears close to the skin. By the later stages, the coffee begins to emerge, followed by oak. The drydown is where most people fall in love. Honey, vanilla, and cinnamon blend into a warm powder that lingers. What surprises is the iris, it doesn't disappear. It stays present through the entire drydown, cool and violet-like against the sweetness, keeping the composition from ever becoming simple.
Cultural impact
What sets Crème Exquis apart is the sustained tension between cool powdery iris and warm chocolate-caramel sweetness. The composition takes a classic oriental structure and filters it through something more restrained, creating a balance that feels both familiar and distinctly contemporary. The cool florals and warm gourmand materials work in constant dialogue, preventing the sweetness from ever tipping into excess. It's a scent built on contrast, where the powdery restraint of iris keeps the chocolate and caramel grounded, and the depth of oak ensures the entire composition stays cohesive rather than lifting away from the skin.
