The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Christian Carbonnel designed Urbane as part of Vivamor Parfums' inaugural collection. The name says it all, urbane, polished, metropolitan. A scent built for someone who moves between rooms and never quite fits into one category. Carbonnel worked with a citrus-gin-lavender structure, combining bright top notes with aromatic depth and a warm, grounded base. The gin note serves as a pivot point, an unexpected bridge connecting the initial burst of citrus to the creamy, woody drydown. This structure creates a fragrance that shifts throughout the day, revealing new facets as hours pass, without ever feeling disjointed or at odds with itself.
What makes Urbane interesting is how the heart and base pull in opposite directions from the opening. The gin note is the pivot point, an unexpected bridge between the bright citrus burst and the warm woody close. Lavender brings an aromatic quality that adds complexity to the heart, while cardamom introduces warmth and subtle spice. Neroli adds a delicate floral note that softens the herbal character without overpowering it. Ceylonese sandalwood does what it always does: grounds the whole thing in cream and warmth, pulling the experience from sharp to settled.
The evolution
The first spray is all citrus. Grapefruit cuts through, bergamot softens the edges, Brazilian orange adds sweetness that keeps the lemon from going sharp. Pink pepper arrives as a whisper, not a shout. The gin then takes over, the juniper quality shifting the energy and adding a botanical complexity that moves the scent away from a typical fresh fragrance. Lavender and cardamom follow, adding depth without weight. The neroli is subtle, a quiet floral note that prevents the heart from becoming too herbaceous. Then the hand-off: sandalwood and amber arrive together, warm and creamy, pulling the scent down toward the skin. Musk holds everything in place. The drydown is intimate by design, staying close like a well-kept secret. On fabric, the citrus notes linger until the next morning. The warmth of sandalwood and amber persists, quieter but unmistakable.
Cultural impact
Urbane occupies a distinctive position in contemporary fragrance, bridging fresh and warm in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental. It's a citrus-gin-aromatic composition that reads as modern without chasing trend, offering something more nuanced than the aquatic or ozonic fragrances that have dominated recent years. The warm sandalwood base ensures complexity carries through from start to finish, while the overall composition maintains an approachability that works across different settings and occasions. This is a fragrance for someone who wants to smell interesting without becoming the room's announcement.
