The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bertrand Duchaufour designed Dark Indulgence in 2023. The opening burst of dark chocolate and citrus arrives simultaneously. Mandarins and chocolate occupy the same space, with the citrus cutting through the bitterness before both settle into the heart. Hazelnut and amberwood take over as the chocolate recedes, grounding the composition in something dry and warm rather than sugary. The interplay between these elements creates a complex aromatic experience that evolves on the skin. The hazelnut adds a subtle nuttiness while the amberwood provides a smooth, woody backdrop. The result is a fragrance that satisfies without overwhelming, a controlled kind of pleasure.
Mandarin orange arrives at the same moment as dark chocolate, bright and bitter, sharp and sweet. The hazelnut adds warmth and nuttiness that smooths the transition. Amberwood provides the dry, woody foundation that prevents the composition from becoming saccharine. The combination creates an interesting tension between bright citrus and rich cocoa notes. By the time vanilla and musk arrive in the base, the fragrance has already established its character: restrained, deliberate, and moreish without being cloying.
The evolution
The opening combines citrus and chocolate, mandarin orange and dark chocolate occupying the same space. The citrus and chocolate notes interact dynamically as the top notes develop. Amberwood and hazelnut then emerge, with the nuttiness warmed by the wood's presence. The chocolate doesn't disappear, instead becoming a more subtle presence within the overall composition. Vanilla and musk arrive in the drydown, creating a soft, intimate base with a slightly salty quality from the ambergris. It's the kind of fragrance that stays close to the skin, present but never loud.
Cultural impact
Dark Indulgence speaks to a specific kind of wearer: someone who wants the comfort of a sweet fragrance without the full-force sweetness that typically comes with it. The restrained character makes it approachable for people who might otherwise avoid gourmand scents entirely. It works equally well in professional settings and intimate evening occasions, bridging the gap between personal indulgence and social appropriateness.
