The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Spirit of Dubai commissioned perfumer Asghar Adam Ali to create a fragrance capturing Dubai's contradictory essence, the electric pulse of crowded souks and the hushed luxury of modern skylines. Rather than merely representing the city, Abjar (meaning 'protection' or 'shelter') was designed as an olfactory sanctuary, a place to retreat into scent when the city's intensity becomes overwhelming. The perfumer built the composition from aromatic tradition upward, grounding it in region-specific materials like oud, myrrh, and frankincense while structuring the modern opening with aldehydes and contemporary woody materials. The result reflects the city's duality through materials that speak to heritage and innovation simultaneously.
The note philosophy in Abjar reflects The Spirit of Dubai's broader commitment to pairing traditional Arabic materials with modern structural techniques. Oud and castoreum provide intensity and character while cashmeran and hedione ensure the fragrance remains wearable in professional and casual contexts alike. Amber and benzoin add warmth without sweetness becoming cloying, and tobacco balances animalic elements with civilized restraint. Each stage of the fragrance journey transitions naturally into the next because the materials are selected to complement rather than compete, creating a composition where ancient and contemporary coexist comfortably.
The evolution
Abjar's scent journey mirrors Dubai's landscape evolution, beginning with the gleam of glass towers catching morning light. Aldehydes and bergamot create that initial electric impression, sharp and polished like modern architecture. Fruity apple and bitter almond then unfold like market stalls opening their stalls, introducing the sensory abundance of traditional souks. The heart transitions from street-level energy to the city's elevated heights, honey and oud representing the fusion of traditional luxury and contemporary ambition. Leather, cashmeran, and castoreum add depth that feels both grounded and aspirational. The drydown settles into the quiet of late evening, tobacco and vanilla offering warmth and comfort, amber and benzoin providing the sweetness of a city that never fully rests, and musk and vetiver grounding the entire experience in something enduring and deeply personal.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, Abjar has become a touchstone for fans of bold animalic leathers, often cited in niche forums as the go‑to scent for confident evenings. Its unapologetic oud‑leather core places it alongside cult classics like Amouage Interlude, while its massive sillage makes it a statement piece in Dubai’s nightlife scene. Wearers describe it as the olfactory equivalent of a midnight rooftop lounge, drawing curious glances wherever it drifts.
