The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Diwan, a 2017 release from The Spirit of Dubai, crafted by perfumer Asghar Adam Ali. The fragrance opens with a bold confrontation of oud and smoke, immediately establishing its presence. This is an invitation rendered in oud and smoke. The composition speaks before you can reach for it. Oud appears in its most assertive form, while incense smoke fills the space with a grounding presence that does not apologize for itself. The fragrance builds through its opening act with confidence, each note asserting itself without hesitation. The structure is architectural from the start, with layers that announce themselves without apology. This is a fragrance that commands attention from its first breath.
The note structure tells a story of layers. Multiple roses appear in the composition, including Taif rose from Saudi Arabia alongside Bulgarian and Turkish varieties, each contributing differently to the blend. The oud appears twice in the fragrance: bright and assertive at the opening, then returning in a smokier, more grounded form in the base. That dual presence gives the fragrance its character. Castoreum anchors the base with animalic depth, adding richness that reinforces the boldness of the oud and smoke.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately with oud and incense smoke, aldehydes and leather cutting through with sharp intensity. Cardamom adds brief spice before the smoke settles into something more intentional. As the top notes begin to fade, fruit arrives. Dewberry and raspberry push through the smoke, their sweetness cutting through the darkness. Grapefruit and orange lift the composition without dismissing the smoke, the two elements coexisting, which is the first notable quality this fragrance displays. The heart phase belongs to rose and amber. The oud recedes, allowing Taif rose to bloom alongside coffee and earthy notes. Geranium and iris add a powdery refinement that keeps the heart from becoming heavy. The drydown is where the smoke integrates into the wood and resin base, becoming structural rather than decorative.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 launch, Diwan has drawn attention for its longevity and sillage. The fragrance occupies a distinct position among bold oud releases. The coffee-castoreum combination gives it a character that stands apart from other oud-rose fragrances, sparking conversation with its unconventional pairing. The interplay of these notes creates something that reaches beyond the expected, making an impression that lingers in memory long after the initial spray.
