The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mahsam Raza built Twelve Ever After around a chypre spine with sharp confidence in the opening. Bergamot, yuzu, grapefruit, and Sicilian lemon lead with crisp clarity, each pulling in a slightly different direction to keep the top from collapsing into a single citrus shout. Violet leaf sits underneath with a bruised-green edge, cool and slightly bitter, threading through the fruit and giving the opening an herbal backbone before the heart settles in. The composition moves with intention: the top notes argue with themselves, then the middle arrives to impose order. The launch lands in 2025 as part of The Dua Brand's Original Blend Collection, bringing neroli, jasmine sambac, lavender, cypress, fig leaf, and oakmoss absolute into the structure.
What makes this composition worth pausing on is the marriage of fig leaf and oakmoss absolute, a pairing that gives the fragrance its specific character. Fig leaf contributes a milky-green bitterness, almost like the smell of a stem snapped in a garden, softening the oakmoss's forest-floor weight. Cypress sharpens the herbal register with a dry, resinous edge while French lavender keeps the heart from drifting into barbershop territory, settling it without dulling it.
The evolution
The opening belongs entirely to the citrus. Bergamot and yuzu slice open cold and bright, then grapefruit zest roughens the edges with a pithy bitterness. Violet leaf threads underneath like something growing between the cracks in pavement, bruised and vegetal. Mint surfaces for a breath, just enough to cool the back of your neck, then steps back. The neroli arrives and the air warms, bringing that orange-blossom softness, and the composition shifts from sparkle to structure. Jasmine sambac blooms quietly, almost reluctant, while lavender settles the heart without making it sleepy. Cypress arrives last in the middle act, resinous and dry, leaning into the base with intention. As the citrus burns off, the oakmoss announces itself with forest-floor authority, and here the suede shows up, soft and slightly powdery, like the lining of a coat.
Cultural impact
Twelve Ever After arrives in 2025 as part of the Original Blend Collection, a chypre structure built around fig leaf, oakmoss absolute, and a layered base of guaiac wood, Haitian vetiver, and patchouli. The fragrance rewards proximity. It doesn't project across a room or fill an elevator with noise. Instead, it stays close to the skin, the kind of scent that reveals itself when someone leans in rather than when they pass by. The combination of white suede, cashmere wood, amber, and white musk in the drydown creates a tactile softness that makes the air around the wearer feel different, warmer, more considered.
