The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Swiss Arabian's Heritage Collection has always been about reimagining what Arabian perfumery can hold. For their first Extrait De Parfum in the collection, the house turned to Angéline Leporini with a clear brief: take tobacco, a note the region knows intimately, and make it sweeter. The result is Tobacco 01, a fragrance that takes the earthiness of raw tobacco leaf and wraps it in plum, apple, and honey until the smoke becomes something gentler, something that opens doors instead of closing them. It's a heritage gesture made modern, and the 2024 launch signals that Swiss Arabian isn't interested in playing it safe with their new chapter.
What makes Tobacco 01 interesting isn't the tobacco itself, it's how the composition uses sweetness as architecture rather than destination. The plum and apple in the top don't just smell good; they create a bridge between the sharp cumin and the eventual tobacco drydown. Honey acts as the load-bearing element, holding space for the ylang-ylang and amber to bloom without overwhelming the structure. By the time sandalwood and musk arrive in the base, the fragrance has completed a full sentence, fruity opening, opulent middle, warm close. The cashmere wood note is doing quiet work here too, adding a soft texture that keeps everything cohesive rather than jagged.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and immediate. Plum and apple arrive together, sweet and tart, with pink pepper providing just enough spark to keep things interesting. Cumin lurks beneath, giving the sweetness a subtle edge that prevents it from feeling juvenile. Within the first hour, the heart notes begin to emerge, labdanum and amber introduce a resinous warmth, while ylang-ylang adds a tropical creaminess that feels unexpected in a tobacco fragrance. The drydown is where Tobacco 01 earns its name. Tobacco becomes the dominant note, but it's not the acrid smoke of a campfire, it's the warm, slightly sweet tobacco of a humidor or a gently smoked wood surface. Honey and vanilla extend the sweetness without making it cloying. Sandalwood and musk provide the foundation, and this is where the fragrance truly performs: expect 8-10 hours on most skin types, with sillage that announces your presence without screaming it. By hour twelve, the skin holds only a faint warmth, tobacco and vanilla, intimate and close.
Cultural impact
Tobacco 01 arrives at a moment when sweet tobacco fragrances are having a broader cultural moment, appealing beyond their traditional demographic. Swiss Arabian's Heritage Collection entry positions this fragrance as a bridge, Oriental enough to feel luxurious, sweet enough to invite daily wear. The 2024 launch reflects the house's ambition to compete in the global extrait market, bringing their expertise in rich, opulent materials to a more accessible sweetness profile. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves, confident, warm, and unmistakably present.
