The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Swiss Arabian built its name on duality: Arabian soul, Swiss precision. The name says warm and methodical. Bold and refined. Oud and rose. Shaghaf means passion in Arabic, and the brief behind this fragrance was as direct as the name. Pour everything into a bottle and call it what it is. The brand was founded in 1974 in Sharjah by Yemeni perfumer Hussein Adam Ali, and Shaghaf Oud Aswad represents a full expression of that founding philosophy, a scent that wears its intentions openly.
The note structure here follows a classic oriental logic: spice and floral in the opening, resinous warmth at the center, and a base that grounds everything in skin-like comfort. Rose and oud are the twin pillars throughout, but the supporting notes from saffron to leather ensure the fragrance never feels static. Swiss Arabian chose these materials to build a scent that performs across the full arc of a night, from entrance to farewell.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a rose and saffron burst, immediately assertive and aromatic, supported by woody notes and thyme for structure. Within the heart, the rose persists but deepens, softened by jasmine and grounded by cumin and patchouli, while oud builds its smoky presence. By the drydown, vanilla and amber arrive to sweeten the composition, sandalwood adds creamy depth, and leather and musk leave a warm, intimate trail that feels like it belongs to the wearer alone.
Cultural impact
Swiss Arabian has positioned itself as a bridge between traditional Arabian perfumery and contemporary Western tastes since its founding in 1974. The Shaghaf line represents a deliberate expansion into more opulent, statement-making compositions that appeal to a global audience seeking authenticity in their oriental fragrances. The use of oud as a central element reflects its deep cultural significance in Arabian heritage, where it has been traded for thousands of years as both a commodity and a marker of status. Releases like Shaghaf Oud Aswad tap into a growing appreciation among consumers worldwide for fragrances that tell stories rooted in specific cultural traditions rather than generic oriental conventions.
