The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Numerus collection frames each release as a numbered meditation on archetypal territory. With 22, the territory is the universal, consciousness without border, self without boundary. Philippe Paparella-Paris structured Universal Mind with six top notes, five heart notes, and five base notes, creating a layered progression that moves through consciousness like a system gaining coherence. The fragrance opens sharp and external, then gradually dissolves inward, mirroring the concept of something that begins as a direct sensation before revealing deeper dimensions.
The opening alone is a statement of intent. Sichuan pepper absolute and absinthe arrive at the front of the composition, their sharp, cool character immediately setting a tone that refuses to disappear quietly. Bulgarian rose and frankincense follow closely behind, warm and resinous, pulling the composition back toward familiarity before the structure settles. It's a deliberate tension: the cool sharpness that opens, the warm floral that follows, and the powdery amber-vanilla base that closes the circle. The three stages aren't just scent phases.
The evolution
The Sichuan pepper hits first. A clean, bright shock at the nostrils, almost aggressive, certainly attention-grabbing. It doesn't last long, but it announces itself clearly. Within minutes, absinthe joins, bringing that cool, herbal, faintly aniseed clarity alongside the Bulgarian rose, which blooms into the composition warm and full, as if it was always there underneath. Frankincense appears shortly after, resinous and slightly smoky, adding weight to what might otherwise read as a straightforward floral. The heart belongs to jasmine absolute and orange blossom absolute, rich, warm, slightly indolic, held in check by cinnamon's spice and geranium's green bite. Cedar essence grounds the florals without suppressing them. As the scent develops, the florals begin to recede.
Cultural impact
The Numerus collection frames each numbered release as a meditation on archetypal territory. 22 Universal Mind joins this series as a floral that argues with itself, balancing sharp opening notes against warm heart notes and a soft, inviting base. The fragrance presents a layered complexity that rewards attention, moving through distinct phases that invite the wearer to notice how the scent evolves against their own skin. It's a composition designed for those who find meaning in the act of wearing perfume itself, who appreciate when a fragrance asks something of its audience beyond simple appreciation.
