The beginning
Spiritum Paris launched in 2022 with 7, Spiritual Explorer, mapping the seventh stop in their Numerus collection to a single idea: introspection. The brand describes it as the fragrance of the number 7 itself, wise, introspective, and seeking truth, a woody gourmand built on the tension between saffron's metallic heat and coffee's roasted hush. Bertrand Duchaufour composed it. That matters here. Duchaufour has spent two decades walking the line between devotional incense and avant-garde construction, and his fingerprints are visible in how 7 handles its sweetness. The caramel doesn't announce itself. It accrues. The raspberry shows up, then disappears behind the saffron like it wasn't invited.
What makes this composition work isn't the gourmand sweetness itself. It's the architecture behind it. Davana sits in the top, a note most people have never smelled standalone but recognize the moment it shows up: fruity, herbal, faintly boozy, the smell of fruit left in a warm room. It bridges the saffron's metallic edge into the rose and caramel below without a seam. Then there's the coffee, treated through a CO2 extraction method that pulls out the fatty, almost chocolate-adjacent undertone while stripping away the burnt-asphalt bitterness you'd find in a mainstream espresso accord.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the saffron. It comes across hot and slightly leathery, metallic in a way that reads less like a spice and more like the smell of a warm coin. Raspberry curls underneath, jammy but restrained, giving the saffron something sweet to chew on. Davana threads through it all, that herbal-fruity hum that makes the opening feel alive instead of just spiced. Around the thirty-minute mark the coffee arrives. Not with a shout. It slides in underneath the saffron and rose, turning the composition from bright-spiced to something darker, closer to the smell of a candle that's been burning in a café for an hour. The rose gets smoky here, the caramel gets real, and suddenly the whole thing reads like the late shift at a pastry counter. Woody notes start pulling at the edges, patchouli and cedar lending the kind of dry structure that keeps this from collapsing into dessert. The drydown is where it earns its keep.

7, Spiritual Explorer is a niche gourmand that takes sweetness seriously enough to question what sweetness can do when it's not leaning on the usual scaffolding. The composition pairs roasted and resinous materials against a gourmand core, creating tension between the dessert-like caramel and the cooler, more austere notes that frame it. On skin, it reads as a thinking gourmand, a fragrance that earns its sweetness through structure rather than through sheer sugar volume.
