Why it exists.
The beginning
Psychedelism belongs to Spiritum Paris's Prism collection, a series built around altered states of consciousness and initiatory experiences. Where companion pieces Shamanism and Tantrism explore connection to natural forces and union of opposites, Psychedelism occupies its own territory within that conceptual framework. Bertrand Duchaufour is the perfumer behind this 2025 release, and his work here translates psychedelic experience into olfactory terms, not through literal recreation but through sensory disorientation. The composition opens with a candied strawberry that carries an unexpected weight underneath, bright fruit colliding with leathery castoreum and neroli's bitter edge before settling into its strange, smoky heart.
What makes Psychedelism structurally unusual is the sheer density of its base. Sixteen materials anchor the composition, including oud, myrrh, frankincense, oakmoss, patchouli, and white musk alongside caramel, vanilla, and benzoin. That kind of layering creates a base that doesn't read as one thing. It reads as terrain, a shifting landscape of resin, wood, and low sweetness that keeps reorganizing itself on the skin. The heart places dark chocolate and coffee next to rose and saffron absolute, a juxtaposition that keeps the wearer slightly off-balance.
The evolution
The opening belongs to strawberry and neroli, the fruit reading as sharp and almost candied before the castoreum moves in underneath, leathery and animal. As the castoreum gains ground, the strawberry stops sounding like a fruit and starts smelling like something being made, something darker and more deliberate. Coffee and dark chocolate take over the heart, warmed by saffron absolute's dry, papery heat. The rose surfaces briefly in this phase, almost startling in its clarity before the resins begin to gather. The drydown is where Psychedelism becomes what it actually is. Oud, myrrh, frankincense, and oakmoss settle into something church-like and ancient, underlaid by caramel and vanilla that keep the whole structure from collapsing into austerity. What's left close to the skin is a smoky warmth, sweet in a low, smoked-sugar register, with patchouli and vetiver doing quiet work beneath.
