The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fleur Excellente arrived in 1998 as a limited release, not for counters or department stores, but for the members of Shiseido's Hanatsubaki Club, the camellia society of the brand's most devoted patrons. A thank-you gift. A small vessel of something meant to be kept rather than shown off. Gardenia was the chosen language, creamy, heady, with an undertow of something almost animalic when it hits warm skin. The scent unfolds like a secret shared between close friends, offering its richest facets only to those who lean in. There's something almost greedy about how it holds itself close at first, then gradually opens as skin temperature rises, releasing waves of white floral that feel simultaneously lush and restrained.
What makes this composition unusual is the lactonic quality, that soft, milky warmth present throughout, but especially in the drydown. Gardenia naturally straddles the line between white floral and cream. Here, the gardenia is held in check by mimosa and musk, which add powdery warmth instead of pushing the floral higher. The result is a gardenia that whispers rather than shouts. Jasmine and rose appear in the heart, but they don't compete with the opening star, they support it.
The evolution
The opening hits soft, gardenia cream arriving on warm skin without fanfare. Within the first hour, jasmine and rose emerge from beneath the gardenia, adding body without adding volume. The mimosa makes itself known through its powdery quality, a soft, golden warmth that builds quietly. By the time the florals have settled, the composition has become something close and intimate. The musk arrives last, not as an announcement but as a landing. The lactonic trail that remains hours later is detectable by someone standing very close, a skin-warm presence that feels less like perfume and more like an extension of the body itself. As time passes, the creamy quality becomes more pronounced, the gardenia softening into a warm, enveloping embrace that lingers in the air immediately surrounding you.
Cultural impact
Fleur Excellente never received a global rollout. As a Hanatsubaki Club exclusive from 1998, it circulated among collectors and Shiseido devotees who knew to ask. Its limited release and exclusive distribution created an air of curiosity around this particular composition, making it something sought after by those who value what others might overlook. The fragrance has maintained a quiet presence in collector circles, discussed by enthusiasts who appreciate its distinctive approach to white floral.
