The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shiseido began as a pharmacy in Tokyo's Ginza district in 1872, taking its name from a passage in The Tale of Genji meaning praise the sunrise. The house spent over a century turning scientific precision into scented storytelling, from its first fragrance onward. Ginza Murasaki was composed for Shiseido by perfumer Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, released in 2022 as part of the house's ongoing Ginza collection, a neighborhood whose identity is inseparable from the brand's own history. Dubreuil-Sereni drew from the neighborhood's dual nature: its modernist precision and its deep roots in Japanese craft and aesthetics, translating that duality into a fragrance that feels both controlled and deeply expressive.
The note selection in Ginza Murasaki reflects a deliberate philosophy: use green and white florals to establish sophistication, then ground them in woody and mossy elements that prevent the composition from feeling ephemeral. Galbanum and gardenia together create an initial tension that mirrors the Ginza district's own contrast between ancient and modern. The drydown's inclusion of leather and oakmoss grounds the florals in something more visceral, more grounded, suggesting a fragrance meant to be worn rather than simply admired.
The evolution
The opening phase sets an immediate tone: galbanum's sharp green character meets gardenia's opulent white floral richness, with bergamot providing brightness and hyacinth lending an almost aquatic freshness. Peach softens the edges just enough to keep the first minutes from feeling aggressive. As the fragrance progresses, the heart emerges as a study in cool florals. Lily of the valley and lily dominate, their clean, almost antiseptic quality contrasting with jasmine's warmer indolic depth. Iris adds powdery softness that elevates the entire mid-phase. Rose appears almost reluctantly, a whisper of romanticism in an otherwise restrained heart. The drydown phase represents the fragrance's most interesting evolution. Ambergris and musk create a warm, enveloping foundation while sandalwood introduces creamy woodsy comfort. Oakmoss then shifts the trajectory toward earthiness and vintage elegance, with leather and vetiver providing the final structural elements: dry, herbal, and quietly assertive.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Ginza Murasaki has quietly built a loyal following among those who prefer florals with restraint over those that announce themselves. Community ratings sit solidly in the positive range, with particular praise for its longevity and the distinctive wisteria heart. Seasonally, it performs best in spring and moderate summer conditions, making it a natural choice for daytime wear, professional environments, and anyone who wants something present without being loud. The fragrance occupies a specific space in the floral-fruity category, not as an immediately likable crowd-pleaser, but as something with a point of view.
