The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nº 2 by SG79|STHLM is a composition built around a clear conceptual tension: an immediately likeable citrus opening that gradually reveals a warmer, more complex character underneath. Christian Vermorel constructed the composition with this contrast in mind, allowing the top notes to announce themselves before giving way to deeper, richer elements. Nº 2 is that work, and what it does with blackcurrant and magnolia is the argument, tart fruitiness meeting creamy florals in a way that holds attention without demanding it. The numbered system at SG79|STHLM invites wearers to approach each fragrance on its own terms, without preconception.
The blackcurrant is the structural surprise. Here it drives the opening with a tartness that stops the citrus from being merely refreshing. Elemi resin, a translucent gum with a citrusy-resinous character, bridges the top and heart without softening the transition. The heart pairs magnolia, with its creamy presence, against rose and black pepper. The combination is unexpected: the warmth of rose against the heat of pepper creates a middle register that reads as both romantic and intentional, not sweet, exactly, but committed. The magnolia does not arrive delicate.
The evolution
The first ten minutes announce themselves clearly. Blackcurrant leads with a tart-fruity brightness, grapefruit and mandarin sharpen the citrus, and the elemi resin adds an almost piney lift that prevents the opening from becoming cloying. It is the smell of a morning with some sharpness to it. Around the twenty-minute mark, the citrus recedes and magnolia takes over, not delicate, but creamy and present, with rose arriving shortly after to ground the florals in something warmer. Black pepper is the quiet structural move here, keeping the florals from feeling soft. By the hour, the drydown has settled into something close and warm: musk against skin, patchouli's earthiness, and tonka bean's sweetness blanketing the rose that refuses to fully leave. The sillage remains moderate throughout, present enough to invite closer encounters without announcing itself across the room.
Cultural impact
The numbered system is itself the statement. In a market built on names, SG79|STHLM stripped the language away and let the compositions speak. Nº 2 sits within the house as an accessible entry point: citrus-forward, well-structured, with enough complexity to reward attention. The moderate sillage invites intimate encounters, the kind of scent that prompts the question, quietly, from someone standing close enough to mean it.
